Patricia A. Markus Selected as Next President-Elect Designate of American Health Law Association

RALEIGH, NC — Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough LLP Raleigh partner Patricia A. Markus has been selected as the next President-Elect Designate by the Board of Directors of the American Health Law Association (AHLA).

“I am absolutely thrilled and honored by this new opportunity to serve the health law community. Participation in AHLA activities has remarkably enriched my life, both professionally and personally, and I look forward to working beside other leaders, staff, and members to create similar learning and growth opportunities for the next generation of health law professionals,” Markus said.

As President-Elect Designate, Markus will play a key role in guiding the Association’s strategic planning efforts leading up to her term as president, which will begin July 1, 2023. Markus joined AHLA’s Board of Directors in 2015 and currently serves as the Chair of the Practice Groups and Special Councils Board Committee. She previously served as a Vice Chair and then Chair of the Health Information and Technology Practice Group from 2008 to 2015, and as a member of the Health Information and Technology Program Planning Committee from 2012 to 2014.

“It’s been a privilege working with Trish Markus for over 25 years. During that time, I’ve seen Trish’s health law practice grow and flourish as she has devoted herself to learning some of the most cutting-edge aspects of health law practice today,” Raleigh Managing Partner Bob Wilson said. “Our firm’s clients have benefited from Trish’s tireless work ethic and her broad knowledge base. Nelson Mullins is excited for Trish and her opportunity to serve in this important leadership role with AHLA.”

Markus has been recognized by such publications as Chambers USA and the Best Lawyers in America for her excellence in health care law practice. She advises clients on health care regulatory compliance and transactional matters, with a special focus on health information privacy, security, and technology issues. She speaks and publishes on health care topics frequently, and she has served in a variety of leadership roles both at AHLA and with other health care organizations.

Markus received her B.A. with honors in English from Haverford College and her J.D. from Boston College Law School. She is a past president of the North Carolina Society of Healthcare Attorneys and a former chair of the North Carolina Bar Association’s Health Law Section.
