WASHINGTON – The National Legal Aid & Defender Association (NLADA), America’s oldest and largest nonprofit association devoted to excellence in the delivery of legal services to those who cannot afford counsel, has awarded Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough LLP its 2022 Beacon of Justice Award in recognition of the Firm’s commitment to addressing racial inequities within its communities and across the nation through pro bono and other efforts that promote equal justice.
Nelson Mullins joins 17 other law firm awardees across the country.
This national award commends the Firm for its efforts in 2021 that intentionally addressed sustained anti-racism work, focusing on that which impacted low-income and vulnerable individuals, families, or nonprofit organizations.
Examples of this pro bono work include national racial legal research projects to drive legislative change, the creation and support of eviction diversion projects and rental assistance clinics.
Other Firm efforts include representing peaceful protestors and filing a class action in Louisiana on their behalf with the ACLU’s Justice Lab; an appeal to reverse qualified immunity of law enforcement in the Eleventh Circuit on behalf of a client whose constitutional rights were violated; representing an objector as to X-ray opposition in the Flint water crisis class action settlement; and ongoing work to secure parole for inmates in South Carolina.
Another set of projects include creating innovative social impact funds to support low-income community development in California and South Carolina, guaranteed-income initiatives, and a nationwide college tuition program to enable underserved students to attend minority higher institutions without incurring debt.
Nelson Mullins belongs to Law Firm Antiracism Alliance (LFAA) and Lawyers For Good Government (L4GG) a network of legal providers to drive systemic change and racial justice. The Firm is leadership partner of L4GG with their Racial Justice Project.
Awardees will be honored at the Exemplar Awards gala, Sustaining Racial Equity and Hope on June 9, 2022 in Washington, DC. This annual gala celebration brings together leadership from the corporate, private, civil legal aid, and public defense communities.
