(April 28, 2017) -- Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough LLP debuted in The Am Law 100, jumping from the 103rd position in 2015 to 88th in 2016 in The American Lawyer’s annual ranking of law firm revenue, after posting the fifth largest percentage increase in revenue among the Am Law 100 firms.
“We are pleased to join the ranks of the nation’s largest law firms while continuing to embrace our lower cost infrastructure that allows Nelson Mullins to provide cost-effective legal services to our clients,” said Managing Partner James K. Lehman. “True success is measured by the trust clients place in us and the opportunities they afford us to work on their most important matters. We are grateful to our clients and everyone in our organization who worked relentlessly to serve our clients with an unwavering dedication to legal excellence.”
Mr. Lehman said client support also allows Firm attorneys to offer their time and talents back to the community through pro bono legal services. Firm attorneys provided more than 30,000 hours of pro bono service in 2016–an average of almost 60 hours per lawyer–to a diverse group of people, such as children, the elderly, the poor, the victimized, and the incarcerated. Last year Nelson Mullins ranked 39th nationwide for average pro bono hours, according to the Am Law National Pro Bono Rankings.
Nelson Mullins’ revenue increased from $321.5 million in 2015 to $380 million in 2016, “continuing a stretch of impressive revenue growth dating back to 2013. In that time, the Firm's gross revenue has grown 41 percent, largely thanks to its investment in Atlanta, where it went from 76 lawyers in 2008 to more than 140 lawyers now,” The American Lawyer noted. Am Law also pointed to the Firm’s opening of new offices in recent years, most notably in New York City in 2015. Nelson Mullins also expanded to the West Coast in November 2016 with the opening of a Denver office and again in early 2017 in the Los Angeles area.
Firm performance was also driven by growth in the Nelson Mullins Encompass practice, a dedicated team of veteran litigators, technologists, project managers, data analysts, and litigation technology professionals that regularly serve as enterprise and global discovery and review counsel to Fortune 50 companies in heavily regulated industry sectors. In 2016 Encompass counseled and managed numerous multi-terabyte matters including Hart Scott Rodino Second Requests, government investigations, patent litigation, and commercial litigation.
Mr. Lehman noted that Nelson Mullins has been working to expand strategically its footprint and to enhance practices with the additions of key attorneys throughout the country, and the ranking shows that the Firm’s growth strategy is working.
Nelson Mullins reported 515 attorneys and 144 equity partners in the latest ranking. Among the notable recent additions to the Firm:
“After a successful year in 2016, we launched into 2017 with even greater focus on providing top-flight client service, forward thinking project management, and an unwavering commitment to legal excellence,” Mr. Lehman said.
