Partner Paul Osowski accepts the award from Cindy Patton, managing attorney of Legal Aid of North Carolina, Inc.
The Firm’s Charlotte office has earned the Legal Aid of North Carolina Outstanding Firm Service Award for its volunteer support of Legal Aid's housing protection work. The pro bono award was presented by Legal Aid along with the Charlotte Center for Legal Advocacy and the Council for Children’s Rights.
Partner Paul Osowski, who coordinates the initiative, accepted the award on behalf of the firm and the nine attorneys and staff who have assisted with the program for just over a year.
The team has provided assistance to the organization’s clients facing wrongful evictions, disputes with landlords over security deposits, and uninhabitable conditions, Osowski said. Charlotte earlier this year ranked 21st out of 100 cities nationwide in highest eviction rates, with 6.15 out of every 100 renter households evicted in 2016.
Faced with that staggering statistic, the attorneys handle legal aspects of the landlord/tenant disputes to make sure landlords are following appropriate processes and North Carolina law. But they also are pragmatic with their clients. “We fight to improve housing conditions, recover security deposits, and keep the clients in their homes as long as possible. But, if eviction is imminent, we encourage them to begin looking for another place to live,” Osowski said. “We maintain lists of organizations that connect folks facing homelessness with resources, either financial or with finding a safe place to live.
“Our Pro Bono Program strives for liberty and justice for all in legal need. The program was created with the mission to serve the less fortunate and nonprofits providing services in our communities and beyond. We are committed to serving the legal, social, and economic issues of the most vulnerable in our society through pro bono service,” he said.
