RALEIGH – The NC Chamber will honor Raleigh partner Dennis A. Wicker with its Distinguished Service Award during its 79th Annual Meeting on March 18. The award is being given to Wicker, a former state lieutenant governor, “for his outstanding record of public responsibility who has made an indelible mark on our state,” according to the organization.
Past recipients include Dr. June Atkinson, Sen. Sam Ervin, the Rev. Billy Graham, Sen. Jesse Helms, and Gov. Jim Hunt, among others.
“Dennis Wicker is a living example of public service,” said NC Chamber President and CEO Gary Salamido. “He has dedicated his life to improving the lives of people before, during, and after holding public office. North Carolina is a better place because of his tireless efforts.”
Wicker stated he was overwhelmed when he heard he had received the award. “I am humbled and honored to be recognized for this award. It inspires me to do more.”
Wicker served two four-year terms as North Carolina’s 31st Lieutenant Governor (1993—2001). Wicker was also a member of the North Carolina House of Representatives for 12 years prior to becoming lieutenant governor and was elected as majority leader by his peers the last two terms.
He currently serves on the Board of Directors of Coca-Cola Consolidated, Inc. of Charlotte, N.C., and First Bancorp of Southern Pines. He is the founder and a current Board member of the Lee County Education Foundation, which has granted approximately $750,000 to the Lee County Schools over the past 15 years. He is also a member of the Board of Visitors of the Campbell University School of Law and on the Duke Heart Center Leadership Council.
Wicker attended the public schools of Lee County. He was admitted to UNC-CH where he graduated Phi Beta Kappa with Honors in Economics and received his law degree from Wake Forest University School of Law.
