John C. McElwaine Chosen as a World Trademark Review Global Leader

CHARLESTON, S.C. — Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough LLP Charleston Office Managing Partner John C. McElwaine has been selected as a World Trademark Review Global Leader.

Now in its second year, this new guide entitled, “WTR Global Leaders 2020” brings together the world’s foremost law firm and corporate practitioners in trademark practice. To qualify for inclusion in the guide, individuals must be ranked in the gold tier of the World Trademark Review 1000. John is ranked in WTR1000 both nationally and in the D.C. Metro Area for trademark enforcement and litigation.

John is the managing partner of the Charleston office and a member of the firm’s Intellectual Property Group. He has been involved with cutting edge trademark, domain name and copyright litigation, as well as actions brought at the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board and proceedings under the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) Uniform Domain Name Dispute Resolution Policy (UDRP).  His work in the area of strategic counseling involves advising clients on intellectual property matters, including the assignment, licensing and development of applications and other technology, as well as brand protection measures on the Internet and within online social media networks.

He has been active since 2009 with ICANN and in leadership with the Intellectual Property Constituency. In November 2019, he was appointed for a two-year term as a councilor to Generic Names Supporting Organization (GNSO) representing the Intellectual Property Constituency. The GNSO council is the policy-making body of ICANN, the not-for-profit partnership dedicated to keeping the Internet secure, stable, and interoperable. The 21 members of the council govern policy development within ICANN.

The WTR1000 identifies the world’s leading trademark law firms and individuals in more than 80 global jurisdictions through an extensive research process led by full-time analysts. In addition, the United States section boasts 20 state-specific chapters, while an international section identifies the firms that have secured WTR 1000 listings in multiple regions.
