In Equity Efforts, Where Does Title IX Truly Stand?

Diverse: Issues in Higher Education

In an article published by the magazine Diverse: Issues in Higher Education on March 16, 2023, Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough LLP associate Alexis F. Trumble described her Title IX gender equity legal practice in the context of the ever-changing collegiate athletics industry.

"The most important part of my job is educating administrators across college campuses on what exactly Title IX means," Trumble explained in the article, considering the law’s brevity.

"The interpretations of Title IX over the last 50 years really run the show, except those interpretations are written by and for lawyers," Trumble told Diverse. "The questions I get [from clients] relate to what Title IX actually means for a boots-on-the-ground college president, general counsel, head coach, [or] athletic trainer, because 37 words are simply too short to cover all of the various areas of education that Title IX touches."

Recognizing the important progress made between Title IX’s passage in 1972 and the federal legislation’s 50th anniversary in 2022, the article explores areas that remain an industry focus, including women’s national championships, athletic scholarships, and regulations governing the prevention, investigation, and adjudication of sexual misconduct. It also highlights ongoing efforts to maintain and improve compliance.

A former collegiate gymnast, Trumble leverages her experience to serve college and university athletics departments nationwide. Diverse is a bi-weekly news magazine that covers issues and topics involving diversity in higher education.
