We are pleased to introduce Orlando senior associate Cassie Guerdan.
Cassie is a transactional attorney. She focuses her practice in the area of commercial real estate by representing developers, purchasers, sellers, and borrowers, for primarily multifamily projects. Cassie has experience representing clients in all aspects of a commercial real estate transaction – from acquisition through disposition – and in both a corporate and real estate role.
Cassie relishes the opportunity to serve others needing help with their wills. “It is rewarding to know that families in my community will not have an experience similar to mine when a loved one passes away and to provide them a service that they would not ordinarily be able to afford and would most likely do without but for the pro bono service,” she said.
Describe a compelling pro bono matter in which you are involved.
I am involved in organizing legal services clinics for the Orlando office in which we provide wills and other estate documentation for clients. We have hosted clinics serving different clients including firefighters and Habitat for Humanity homeowners. We have partnered with Community Legal Services of Orlando to offer wills to the community as well.
What is most meaningful to you about your engagement?
I had a relative pass away without a will. I know firsthand the added stress and difficulty that situation can create during an already trying time and how important it is for someone to have a will and their affairs in order.
I enjoy volunteering with other attorneys in the Orlando office, the connection it creates between the volunteers, and providing the office with pro bono opportunities. What I enjoy most is knowing the impact we have on the clients we serve. They are so appreciative of our assistance, and you see that at every clinic.
What impact has this work had on you personally?
Participating in pro bono has pushed me out of my comfort zone. I am engaging with members of the community and the firm, and I would not otherwise being doing so if it were not for the clinics. Initially, I did not have could do pro bono because I had never done so before. The clinics have allowed me to learn about Nelson Mullins’ pro bono department, the opportunities available, and the firm’s resources to support you in providing pro bono services. I am no longer afraid to accept a pro bono matter or volunteer at an event.
As a transactional attorney, we typically only see results when a deal closes. Having the chance to work side-by-side with a client to write their will has allowed me to experience the immediate and meaningful effect that my and the firm’s service has on someone’s life. It gives me a sense of gratitude and appreciation that I can make a difference.
