Nelson Mullins' Malone Recognized for Diversity Service
ATLANTA (March 21, 2011) -- S. Wade Malone, a partner in Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough's Atlanta office, has received the firm's 2011 Sheryl Ortmann Diversity Award for his significant achievements in promoting diversity in the legal profession.
Mr. Malone was one of four Atlanta lawyers who founded the Atlanta Bar Association Summer Law Internship Program in 1993 for students from Therrell H.S., a high school in the Atlanta Public School System that the Atlanta Bar Association had adopted in the late 1980s. The overriding goal of the Intern Program has been to provide meaningful work experiences for students who otherwise might not have them. He has co-chaired the Intern Program since its inception with 2011 being the 19th straight summer the Atlanta Bar Association will conduct the Intern Program. More than 375 internships have been made available in the Intern Program's first 18 years. Many of the intern program's participants have gone on to become attorneys. Mr. Malone also helped coach the Therrell Mock Trial Team for six years, during which time the team won five regional titles.
"Wade's commitment to diversity has spanned his entire career," said Juliane Balliro, the Nelson Mullins Boston partner who chairs the Firm's Diversity Committee. "Wade is a valuable mentor to diverse attorneys in the Firm and is most deserving of this award for his service in the Atlanta community."
The award is named for Nelson Mullins' first woman partner and is awarded by the Diversity Committee, which develops policies and standards designed to attract and sustain a workforce that represents the Firm’s national practice.
