Kay West Takes Helm of FBA Chapter
The S.C. Chapter of the Federal Bar Association recently inducted Columbia partner Kay West as president. Columbia partner Courtney Shytle also has been elected to a two-year term on the Executive Board.
"I am both pleased and honored to have this opportunity to lead this important group," Ms. West said. "The group's mission to serve as liaison among federal lawyers and judges is an important one, and I look forward to a very productive year."
The South Carolina Chapter was originally formed in 1964, but fell dormant for years. In 2001, a group of lawyers reactivated the state chapter with 30 members. In the years since, the chapter has grown to more than 300 members from private practice, government agencies, military branches, local law schools, and the courts.
In addition to its Annual Ethics CLE and Judicial Reception, the South Carolina Chapter hosts annual summer law clerk seminars around the state. The chapter also hosts small "Meet & Greet" luncheons for members to have the opportunity to discuss with a federal district court or magistrate judge topics applicable to federal practice in a relaxed and casual setting.
On Oct. 15-16, the South Carolina Law Review will sponsor a symposium on the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit at the University of South Carolina School of Law. The SC Chapter of the Federal Bar Association is co-sponsoring the keynote address of Judge Wilkinson and a reception honoring him.
