Erik Norton

COLUMBIA (April 18, 2007) – Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough LLP has honored Erik Norton with the 2006 Claude M. Scarborough, Jr. Award for his pro bono work.

Mr. Norton, a Columbia associate, won for his work developing the Student Advocacy Project. Launched in 2006 to represent the legal needs of children in school administrative proceedings, the Student Advocacy Project primarily represents special needs students throughout the state. Currently 16 attorneys are participating in the project in a variety of ways, including counseling parents, lobbying the legislature for policy change, representing students in state complaint and due process proceedings, and assisting students in any other legal issues that arise. Attorneys receive referrals from a variety of sources, but work closely with lay advocacy organizations.
