NASHVILLE
– Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough LLP has expanded in Tennessee with the addition of two experienced attorneys in its Nashville office. Kevin Doherty and Cynthia Wiel joined the Firm last week. They bring experience in several practice areas, including insurance regulation and healthcare capabilities.

Mr. Doherty joins as a partner and practices in the area of insurance regulatory law, with particular emphasis on captives, risk retention groups, self-insurance funds, and other alternative insurance vehicles. Mr. Doherty helped to rewrite the captive insurance law in Tennessee in 2011 that allows the state to more aggressively attract captives and risk retention groups. He also represents recording artists, publishers, songwriters, and music-related companies in industry agreements and transactions.

Also practicing in the captives area, Ms. Wiel joins as Of Counsel. She drafted the 2013 amendment to the captive insurance law and successfully lobbied it through the General Assembly. Ms. Wiel also concentrates on insurance regulatory law, business law, healthcare law, municipal utility law and wine & liquor regulation. She represents corporations and associations in their dealings with state and local governments and has experience drafting legislation, advising clients on the effect of pending legislation, and representing clients in contracting with the State of Tennessee, including TennCare managed care organizations.

"We welcome Kevin and Cynthia to the Firm and to our Nashville team and look forward to introducing them to our clients," says Larry Papel, Nelson Mullins' Nashville Office Managing Partner.  "Their experience adds to the Firm's regulatory and healthcare practices and provides depth to our scope of client services."

Nelson Mullins entered Tennessee with the opening of its Nashville office in April 2012. The Nashville office also houses nearly 100 lawyers dedicated to the Firm’s Encompass e-Discovery Division, which handles large scale document review projects for Nelson Mullins clients.

Mr. Doherty is chairman and president of the Tennessee Captive Insurance Association, Inc.
