Nelson Mullins' Alexander Appointed Chair of Key Practice Group of the American Health Lawyers Association

AlexanderRALEIGH, N.C. (July 23, 2010) -- The American Health Lawyers Association has appointed Barry Alexander, a partner at Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough LLP, as Chair of the Regulation, Accreditation, and Payment Practice Group ("RAP PG"). Mr. Alexander accepted his term June 26, 2010 in Seattle, Washington, at the American Health Lawyers Association Annual Meeting.

For Mr. Alexander, being head of this practice group at this crucial juncture is an honor. "I greatly appreciate the opportunity to lead this practice group at a time of significant change in the healthcare industry," Mr. Alexander said. "We are just beginning to find our way through the most significant recasting of the healthcare system in a generation. I hope that the Regulation, Accreditation, and Payment Practice Group can shine some light on what is ahead for the healthcare industry."

Mr. Alexander has been working in healthcare for more than 20 years including in-house operational and practical experience and prior legal and policy experience in Washington, D.C., at one of the nation's largest health law firms. Mr. Alexander is currently a partner in Nelson Mullins' Raleigh office, and he chairs the Firm's National Healthcare Practice Group. Mr. Alexander, who is an active member of the District of Columbia and North Carolina Bars, focuses his practice on:

  • Medicare reimbursement including compliance and reimbursement issues arising principally under Parts A, B, and D of the Medicare Program;
  • Healthcare fraud and abuse counseling and defense including compliance issues arising under the federal healthcare program's anti-kickback statute, the physician federal self-referral or Stark law,  the Federal Civil False Claims Act (FCA), and the Medicare civil monetary penalty and civil exclusionary laws; and
  • Complex healthcare M&A and healthcare finance matters for private nonprofit and for-profit entities including publicly traded healthcare providers, venture capital organizations, and syndicated lenders.

The American Health Lawyers Association recently ranked Nelson Mullins as having the fifth largest healthcare practice in the United States.
