J. Gresham Barrett is a member of Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough LLP’s Government Relations Group and its Federal Strategies Team. He has significant federal experience and represents clients before federal, state, and local legislative, regulatory and administrative agencies. He is based in the Firm’s Washington, DC, and Greenville, SC, offices.

Congressman Barrett served in the U.S. House of Representatives representing South Carolina’s 3rd District from January 2003 to January 2011. During his tenure he served on key committees and subcommittees including the Committee on Financial Services, the Committee on Foreign Affairs, the Energy and Commerce Committee, and the Committee on Standards of Official Conduct.

Before Congress he served in the S.C. House of Representatives from the 1st District from 1996-2002.  There, he served on the Education and Public Works Committee; Labor, Commerce, and Industry Committee; Rules Committee, and the School Choice Ad Hoc Committee. He also chaired the Ad Hoc Committee on Urban Growth.

A native of Westminster, SC, Congressman Barrett earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the Citadel in 1983. He served in the U.S. Army from 1983-1987 and attained the rank of captain in the field artillery. He is a businessman who formerly ran the family’s furniture store, Barrett's Furniture Store.
