First Status report published
by National Prevention, Health Promotion,
and Public Health Council
The National Prevention, Health Promotion, and Public Health Council (Council), which was created by the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, issued its 2010 first Annual Status report to Congress. Citing the historic opportunity to bring prevention and wellness to the forefront of the nation's efforts to improve health, the Council stated its strategy is significant because of the community health approach it is taking to prevention and wellness. According to the Council's report, its strategy will "prioritize evidence-based policy and program interventions intended to meet measurable goals related to the leading causes of death and disability and the factors that underlie these causes, including tobacco use, obesity, poor nutrition, physical inactivity, and excessive alcohol use." The Council's priorities are intended to align with specific Healthy People 2020 objectives and goals of increasing quality of life, eliminating health disparities, and promoting healthy development and behaviors across life stages. Interventions will not be limited to health and public health sectors, but rather will also include areas such as "housing, transportation, in-school and outdoor education, the workplace, and the environment."
