Robbie Whelan is a partner of Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough in Charleston who practices in general litigation with extensive experience in construction, insurance, product liability, and personal injury litigation. A member of the South Carolina Bar, he is also a member of the American Bar Association, the Charleston County Bar Association, and the South Carolina Defense Trial Attorneys' Association. 

Mr. Whelan has successfully defended insurance companies against claims of bad faith, including obtaining numerous summary judgment victories, a defense verdict in a week-long bad faith trial, and appellate court victories. In the construction field, Mr. Whelan has represented general contractors, subcontractors, design professionals, and product manufacturers in mediations, arbitrations, and state and federal trial courts and courts of appeal.  He has also served as lead counsel for the plaintiff in a civil rights trial which received international media coverage. In 2007, Mr. Whelan was awarded the Claude M. Scarborough award for outstanding pro bono services. Mr. Whelan is a graduate of the national session of the National Institute of Trial Attorneys trial academy, and the South Carolina Defense Lawyers trial academy.  

In 2003, Mr. Whelan earned a Juris Doctor, cum laude, from the University of South Carolina School of Law where he was named to the Order of the Coif, served as associate articles editor of the South Carolina Law Review, and was a member of the Order of Wig and Robe. In 2000, Mr. Whelan earned a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from the College of Charleston.
