Robert M. Sellards is a partner in Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough’s West Virginia office and has considerable experience practicing in the areas of medical malpractice, insurance defense, insurance bad faith and product liability, and motor carrier liability.

Mr. Sellards’ medical malpractice/litigation experience includes full case responsibility for professional malpractice/negligent credentialing and negligent privileging cases, including legal malpractice and medical malpractice cases. In his healthcare transactional experience, he has

  • Facilitated multiple purchases of physician practices by healthcare facilities;
  • Assisted in the development and updating of hospital policies and procedures to satisfy the requirements of STARK and its OIG interpretations;
  • Represented and defended physicians and nurses during state medical licensing matters in West Virginia; and
  • Provided general corporate counsel to multiple hospitals, including leases, general contracts, human resource guidance and assistance in the setting litigation liability reserves.

He is admitted to practice in West Virginia and Kentucky as well as before the West Virginia Supreme Court of Appeals, the Southern and Northern District of West Virginia United States District Court, and all West Virginia Circuit and Magistrate courts.

Mr. Sellards is a member of the West Virginia State Bar, the West Virginia Bar Association, Cabell County Bar Association, Defense Trial Counsel of West Virginia, and the American Bar Association. He is also a member of the Cabell County Young Professionals Chamber of Commerce.

He earned his Juris Doctor in 2001 from Duquesne University School of Law, where he received the Justice Louis L. Maderino Honor Society Award for Excellence in Trial Advocacy, was a national finalists in the American Trial Lawyers Association Trial Competition in 1999-2000 and 2000-2001, and was named Outstanding Trial Student in 1999-2000 and 2000-2001.

In 1998, he earned Bachelors of Science in Healthcare Management, cum laude, and Business Management, cum laude, both from Marshall University, where he also minored in Accounting, Military Science & Communications.
