Juliane Balliro is a partner in Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough's Boston office who has been trying cases in the areas of white-collar criminal defense and employment law for more than 25 years. Ms. Balliro represents companies, executives, and individuals in complex business, employment, and criminal cases. Ms. Balliro has tried in excess of 100 cases in various state and federal courts and has authored and argued dozens of appeals.

White-Collar Litigation

For more than two decades, Ms. Balliro has been representing criminal defendants charged with a wide range of white-collar crimes such as bank fraud, wire fraud, tax evasion, Medicare and Medicaid fraud, false claims, Internet pharmacy violations, and bid rigging. Ms. Balliro has represented individuals and companies from the banking, health care, business, public, and private sectors.

 Some representative white-collar cases that Ms. Balliro has handled include:

  • Successfully representing a business owner in a matter involving a claim of more than $400,000 in Medicare fraud.
  • Recently obtaining a not-guilty verdict in the federal district court for an attorney accused of wire fraud and income tax evasion.
  • Negotiating a civil settlement in an asbestos case involving claims of improper removal and disposal.

 Employment Litigation

 Ms. Balliro also has extensive experience litigating labor and employment matters involving claims of discrimination, civil rights abuses, wage and hour violations, infringement of trade secrets, and disputes surrounding non-competes.

Some representative employment cases that Ms. Balliro has handled include:

  • A post-judgment settlement exceeding $1.6 million in a whistleblower and Title VII action.
  • A judgment exceeding $1 million in a claim for retaliation based upon pregnancy discrimination.
  • Successful appeal on behalf of a Massachusetts employer in a case of first impression under the Massachusetts Equal Pay Act (MEPA), a case that substantially narrowed employer exposure to gender-based equal wage claims.

Ms. Balliro, working with a team of lawyers, was also recently successful in obtaining a $102 million verdict against the federal government in a claim of malicious prosecution arising under the Federal Tort Claims Act.

Ms. Balliro is a frequent lecturer on labor and employment, criminal defense, and civil rights topics and has been a contributing author to a wide variety of legal publications, including The Massachusetts Superior Court Criminal Practice Manual, The Massachusetts Employment Law Manual, Trying Drug Cases in Massachusetts, and Pre-Trial Motions in Criminal Cases.

Ms. Balliro is a member of the American, Massachusetts, and Boston Bar Associations, a former president of the Massachusetts Association of Women Lawyers, a former member of the board of directors of the Massachusetts Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, a Fellow of the Massachusetts Bar Foundation, and a Fellow of the American Bar Foundation.  Ms. Balliro is also a trustee for Sabrina's Foundation, an IRS-recognized 501(c)(3) charitable organization dedicated to the study and research of female cardiovascular disease. She has been named in Boston Magazine as one of the top 50 women lawyers in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, in the Corporate Counsel Edition of Super Lawyers as a top attorney in the field of employment law, in Lawdragon Magazine as a Lawdragon 500 Leading Lawyers in America, and as a Massachusetts Lawyer's Weekly Lawyer of the Year for 2007. 

Ms. Balliro is admitted to practice in Massachusetts, the Supreme Court of the United States, the U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts, and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the First Circuit. 

Ms. Balliro earned her Juris Doctor in 1981 from Boston College School of Law and earned a Bachelor of Arts in 1978 from Boston College.
