Lawrence J. Scott is a partner in the Charlotte office of Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough LLP. Mr. Scott joined the firm in 2001 and served as managing partner of the Charlotte office from 2001 through 2005. Mr. Scott’s previous role as vice president and general counsel for a public company provided valuable experience with and insight into a broad range of business and legal issues facing commercial enterprises. In addition, Mr. Scott’s service with a first-tier international public accounting firm gave him beneficial tax and accounting experience. His practice focuses on counseling organizations and individuals in commercial matters, and he regularly advises and assists businesses on organizational and operational issues, dispute resolutions, strategic relationships, and tax strategies. The structuring and effecting of acquisitions, dispositions and joint ventures of businesses, and the financing of such transactions are significant aspects of his practice. Mr. Scott has extensive experience in the healthcare industry and advises clients on joint ventures of hospitals and ancillary facilities, employment and other operational matters, structural and governance issues, health law regulatory matters, federal and state tax planning, and financial and economic analysis.

Mr. Scott is a member of the North Carolina State Bar and the South Carolina Bar, and he is a certified public accountant. Mr. Scott is a member of the American Bar Association, the American Health Lawyers Association, the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, and the North Carolina Association of Certified Public Accountants.

In 1984, Mr. Scott earned a Juris Doctor from the University of South Carolina School of Law where he was named to The Order of the Coif. During law school, he was a member of the South Carolina Law Review and the Order of Wig and Robe. He served as a legal writing instructor and he received the Arthur B. Custy Tax Award and the Prentice-Hall Award for Income Tax. Mr. Scott earned a Bachelor of Arts in Economics and Business Administration, cum laude, from Furman University in 1981.
