John W. Springer is of counsel to Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough in its Charlotte office. He has considerable experience in issues related to legal management with an emphasis on corporate, development, construction, and risk management.
 
Mr. Springer has been previously associated with another North Carolina law firm, general counsel for two construction-related companies and subsidiaries, and general counsel for a chemical company.
 
His representative experience includes: 
 
  • Leading litigation and resolution efforts in multiple construction disputes;
  • Providing senior counsel to major client on multi-office development project;
  • Advising on corporate, executive, and director liability and coverage issues; and
  • Leading firm industry team on corporate finance and risk management for the architecture, engineering, and construction industry. 
 
As a corporate general counsel, he gained experience in negotiating with senior creditors, lenders, and sureties; eliminating claims; organizing data rooms and due diligence programs; and overseeing reorganization, work-out, and orderly liquidations.
 
Mr. Springer is a member of the American Bar Association and a member of its Antitrust Law Committee, Forum Committee on the Construction Industry, and Public Contract Law and Taxation Committee. He also is a member of the North Carolina Bar Association, the Mecklenburg County Bar Association, and the Georgia Bar Association (1978- present).
 
He currently serves on the Bond Oversight Committee for the Board of Education and Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools system. He also has been active with the Boy Scouts, Mecklenburg Council. A member of Leadership Georgia in 1994, he served as a Trustee of The Springer (the State Theatre of Georgia) from July 1981 to 1998; served on the 1992 Charter Review Commission for the Consolidated Government of Columbus, Ga.; and headed the Tax Review Committee. He also organized and served as chairman of The Chattahoochee River Keeper, Inc. (Georgia’s first river watch program) from 1992 to 1995.
 
Mr. Springer earned an LL.M. in Taxation from New York University in 1981. He earned a Juris Doctor in 1978 from the University of Alabama School of Law, where he was awarded a Book Award for Contracts I, served on the committee to write the Honor Code for the School of Law, and was elected by the student body to serve on the first Honor Court. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in Economics, with distinction, from the University of Virginia in 1975.
