Jay Suhr is a partner in Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough’s Charlotte office. He has significant experience in finance transactions, representing national and regional clients in all aspects of commercial lending, as well as complex real estate, mezzanine finance, and equity investments. His primary focus areas are commercial real estate finance and equity investment by traditional and capital markets lenders and representation of servicers in commercial loan transactions, including loan assumptions, transfer consents, partial releases, and defeasance. Mr. Suhr also is involved in more complex real estate acquisitions and development deals, including air rights developments.

Mr. Suhr serves as North Carolina counsel to many out-of-state lenders and real estate funds. Additionally, he has served as lead partner for the oversight and closing of real estate secured loans and mezzanine loans secured by office, multi-family, retail, warehouse, hospitality, mixed-use, institutions, and healthcare properties in excess of $25 billion. Mr. Suhr also represents funds selling, purchasing, managing, and servicing real estate, whole loans, A/B notes, and participation interests in the distressed asset and debt markets.

Mr. Suhr serves on the Board of Directors of the Mecklenburg Bar Foundation (2009-2012). He is included among Business North Carolina magazine’s 2010 Legal Elite and is listed in North Carolina Super Lawyers 2009 as one of the state’s Rising Stars in banking. He was named in the “40 Under 40” Charlotte Business Journal list in 2004.

He earned his Juris Doctor, magna cum laude, in 1992 from the American University Washington College of Law. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in 1988 from the University of Virginia.
