Jim Kanner is a partner in the Atlanta office of Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough LLP and a member of the Firm's Tax Group.
Mr. Kanner's practice focuses on the full range of tax and business issues impacting business organizations and their owners, including structuring new business entities and joint ventures, operational issues and executive compensation, and investment, acquisition and divestiture transactions such as venture capital and private equity financing, taxable and tax-free mergers and acquisitions, liquidations, spinoffs and other distributions. Mr. Kanner serves as principal outside counsel to numerous businesses in a wide range of industries.
Mr. Kanner also advises clients in connection with wealth protection and transfer planning, business succession and charitable transfers, including the preparation of wills, trusts, agreements among business owners, lifetime gifts and transfers, redemptions, family partnerships, insurance trusts and powers of attorney. He also regularly represents fiduciaries in connection with issues arising in the administration of trusts and estates, such as proceedings to construe, amend, or terminate governing documents.
Mr. Kanner is a member of the American Bar Association, the State Bars of Georgia and North Carolina, and the Atlanta Bar Association.
Mr. Kanner earned a Master of Laws in Taxation from Emory University in 1986, a Juris Doctor from Washington and Lee University School of Law in 1982, and a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1979.
