Howard A. VanDine, III, is a partner of Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough LLP. Residing in Columbia, he practices in the areas of construction litigation, product liability defense, tort litigation, and insurance defense.

With extensive experience in construction-related disputes and construction defect litigation, Mr. VanDine has represented owners, general contractors, subcontractors, suppliers, and component manufacturers. Through his practice, he has been heavily involved in the drafting of construction contracts, resolving on-site problems and handling surety and lien-related matters. Mr. VanDine has represented entities before the S.C. Licensing Board, the S.C. Engineering Board, State and Federal Courts, and handled numerous complex construction-related arbitrations and mediations. Mr. VanDine's clients include owners, window manufacturers, plumbing and concrete installers, framers, contractors, roofers, and power tool manufacturers regarding deficiencies in their work or products. As a past member of the Richland County Planning Commission, Mr. VanDine is well versed in planning, land use, and zoning matters and has assisted clients in obtaining necessary permits and re-zonings. Mr. VanDine acts as legal counsel to the South Carolina Guaranty Association and South Carolina Wind and Hail Association, and as such is knowledgeable concerning insurance insolvency and guaranty fund protection as well as coverages applicable to contractors and construction participants.

Mr. VanDine is a member of the South Carolina Bar and its Construction Industry Committee. Additionally, he is a member of the North Carolina State Bar and is admitted to practice before the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, the U.S. District Court for the District of South Carolina, and the U.S. District Courts for the Eastern, Middle, and Western Districts of North Carolina. Mr. VanDine is a member of the American Bar Association (Construction Industry Forum; Torts and Insurance Practice Section), the Defense Research Institute, the Richland County Bar Association, and the South Carolina Defense Trial Attorneys Association.

In 1987, Mr. VanDine earned a Juris Doctor from the Marshall-Wythe School of Law at the College of William and Mary where he was a member of Phi Delta Phi. He earned a Master of Planning from the University of Virginia in 1984; a Bachelor of Science in Landscape Design and Horticulture from Colorado State University in 1980; and a Bachelor of Science in Natural Resources and Forestry from the University of Vermont in 1975.
