Eric A. Paine is a partner of Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough LLP. He practices in Columbia in the areas of product liability and business litigation. Most recently, Mr. Paine’s work has focused on the management of complex litigation in the defense of pharmaceutical and medical device cases. He concentrates on scientific and medical causation issues including extensive work with physicians, pharmacologists, and epidemiologists. He has had the pleasure of working with experts from top universities, including a Nobel laureate, in the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom.
A member of the South Carolina Bar and the Kentucky Bar, Mr. Paine is admitted to practice before the 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals and the U.S. District Courts for the District of South Carolina, the Eastern and Western Districts of Kentucky, and the District of Colorado. Mr. Paine is a member of the American Bar Association, the Kentucky Bar Association, the South Carolina Bar Association, the Richland County Bar Association, and the South Carolina Defense Trial Attorneys’ Association.
On the national level, Mr. Paine is an active member of the Defense Research Institute, holding positions in DRI’s Drug and Medical Device Committee (Steering Committee) and as a member of the Trial Tactics Committee involved in the 2008 Complex Medicine Seminar.
He is the author of “Direct-to-Consumer Advertising of Prescription Drugs: A Primer for Industry and Counsel,” a presentation for the Defense Research Institute’s Drug and Medical Device Litigation Defense Practice Seminar, 2000; and “Recent Trends in Fraternity-Related Liability,” 23 Journal of Law and Education 191, 1994. He has authored articles for other publications, including a forthcoming publication on European privacy law and its impact on multinational corporations involved in litigation in the United States.
Mr. Paine is a member of Nelson Mullins’ Recruiting Committee and has served on its Associates Committee. He plays an active role in mentoring young attorneys. Prior to joining Nelson Mullins, Mr. Paine had an active legal practice with a leading Kentucky firm.
In 1994, Mr. Paine earned a Juris Doctor from the University of South Carolina School of Law where he served on the editorial board of the South Carolina Law Review and was a member of the Order of Wig and Robe. Mr. Paine received American Jurisprudence Awards for Constitutional Law and Torts. In 1991, he earned a Bachelor of Arts in International Relations, magna cum laude, from the South Carolina Honors College at the University of South Carolina where he was named to Phi Beta Kappa.
