Former Lieutenant Governor Dennis Wicker is a partner in Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough's Raleigh office. He offers considerable government relations experience to clients, having served in the state's second highest government position and as a long-time member of the state's largest legislative body.
From 1993-2001, he served two four-year terms as North Carolina's Lieutenant Governor. During his term of office he became the first statewide elected official to chair the State Board of Community Colleges, which sets policy for the state's 58-campus system. He was also a member of the State Board of Education and the State Board of Economic Development.
He was a member of the N.C. House of Representatives for 12 years prior to becoming Lieutenant Governor, and during the last two terms he was elected House Majority Leader by his peers.
Governor Wicker is a regular panelist on the television show "NC Spin" discussing various current issues in North Carolina politics.
He is a former named member of SZD Wicker and Helms Mulliss & Wicker.
In 2009 he was honored with the Distinguished Scouting Award, Three Rivers District of the Boy Scouts of America. In 2008 he was recognized by Triangle Business Leader Magazine as a Triangle Business Leader.
A member of the North Carolina Bar Association, he also serves on the Coca-Cola Bottling Company Consolidated Board of Directors; the First Bank Board of Directors; the Air-T, Inc., Board of Directors; the Lee County Education Foundation Board of Directors; and the North Carolina State University College of Management Advisory Board.
He is the author of "Political Advocacy Can Boost Bottom Line," Triangle Business Leader, August 15, 2008. A sought-after speaker, he recently spoke on the topic "Government Can Be Your Enemy or It Can Be Your Friend - For a Client, It's Better If It's Your Friend." He also co-hosted primary election night coverage on the Triangle's WPTF radio and has spoken on professionalism in the Bar.
He earned his Juris Doctor in 1978 from Wake Forest University School of Law. He earned a Bachelor of Arts, with honors, from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa.
