J. Christopher Clark is a partner of Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough LLP in Myrtle Beach where his practice is focused on commercial and civil litigation. He is experienced in a wide variety of litigation areas, including business liability, mold and construction defect claims, complex real estate disputes, and errors and omissions claims.
Mr. Clark has successfully represented numerous Fortune 500 companies in jury and bench trials, and he has argued before both the S.C. Supreme Court and the S.C. Court of Appeals. He has also served as in-house litigation counsel for Burroughs and Chapin, Inc., a Myrtle Beach real estate development company with holdings throughout the Southeast. In that capacity he represented the corporation in a wide variety of issues facing developers and builders, including mechanic’s lien and change-order disputes, easements, commercial landlord/tenant issues, and real estate broker liability.
Mr. Clark is the author of several articles on topics of interest to the legal and business community, including “State v ARD: Statutory Aggravating Circumstances and the Emergence of Fetal Personhood in South Carolina,” 50 S.C. L. REV. 887 (1999); and “South Carolina’s ‘Substantial Connection’ Test for Using Evidence of Insurance to Prove Witness Bias, 14 Aug. S.C. Law. 15.
In addition to his primary practice areas, Mr. Clark enjoys devoting pro bono services to the community and has tried cases on behalf of pro bono clients in the areas of prisoner rights and parental custody, among others.
A member of the South Carolina Bar, Mr. Clark is admitted to practice before the U.S. District Court for the District of South Carolina. He also is a member of the Defense Research Institute, the South Carolina Defense Trial Lawyer’s Association, and the American Bar Association.
He earned a Juris Doctor, cum laude, from the University of South Carolina School of Law in 2000. During law school, Mr. Clark served as editor in chief of the South Carolina Law Review, and he was a member of the John Belton O’Neall Inn of Court and the Order of Wig and Robe. Mr. Clark also served as research assistant to Professor Robin Wilson in the area of healthcare law and policy. Mr. Clark earned a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science, cum laude, from the University of Kentucky in 1997. Before college, he served overseas in the U.S. Army as a Medical Specialist.
