Engaged in active trial practice for more than 35 years, Mr. Shaw has served for more than 18 years as national counsel for an insulation manufacturer's asbestos litigation. During this time, he has been involved in several mass trials, including the largest asbestos trial in history, which was tried in Baltimore, Maryland, and the largest all-issues trial, which was tried in Houston, Texas. Mr. Shaw has also represented a group of more than 30 asbestos-related companies under complex counsel-sharing agreements. He has served as chief negotiator in several global asbestos settlements and has negotiated claims-handling procedures for future claims in asbestos litigation. Mr. Shaw is a frequent speaker for Defense Research Institute and bar association seminars, and he is co-author of "The Law of Automobile Insurance in South Carolina," South Carolina Bar, 1988.
A member of the South Carolina Bar (House of Delegates, 1975-87), Mr. Shaw has been admitted for purposes of trials to the Supreme Court of the United States, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth and Fifth Circuits, and U.S. District courts in approximately 20 states. He is a member of the American Bar Association, the American Bar Foundation, and the American Board of Trial Advocates (South Carolina president, 1999-2000, secretary treasurer, 1997-98, program chairman, 1996-97). He is a fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers (Chair, South Carolina Chapter, 2005-06, South Carolina State Committee, 2002-03, 2004-05, Complex Litigation Committee, 1995-present, Teaching/Trial and Appellate Advocacy Committee, 2004-present) and the International Academy of Trial Lawyers (Chair, South Carolina Chapter, 2005-06, State Chair Committee, 1998-present; Board of Directors, 2002-present; Budget and Finance Committee, 2007-present). He is a member of the Defense Research Institute (vice chairman, Industry-Wide Litigation Committee, 1985-86), the Fourth Circuit Judicial Conference, the Richland County Bar Association, and the South Carolina Defense Trial Attorneys' Association (president, 1978-79, secretary treasurer, 1977-78, Hemphill Award for public service, 1993). Mr. Shaw served as state chairman of The Supreme Court Historical Society from 2002-07. He is "one of a distinguished group of attorneys who have been listed in The Best Lawyers in America for ten years or longer" (1995-2012) and will be featured in their upcoming 25th anniversary edition. He also is listed in South Carolina Super Lawyers (2008-2012 editions).
In 1993, Mr. Shaw received the Robert W. Hemphill Award, given by the South Carolina Defense Trial Attorneys' Association for distinguished and meritorious service to the Bar and general public. A member of the executive board of the South Carolina Philharmonic Orchestra, Mr. Shaw served on its board of directors from 1994-2000 and was vice president of development from 1997-98.
Mr. Shaw earned a Bachelor of Laws, cum laude, from the University of South Carolina in 1965. During law school, he was a member of the Order of Wig and Robe and Phi Delta Phi, and he was Law Notes Editor and Law Survey Editor of the South Carolina Law Review from 1964-65. Mr. Shaw earned a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and History from the University of South Carolina in 1962.
