Matthew T. Gomes is a partner of Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough LLP and practices in Atlanta in labor and employment law, litigation and workers’ compensation/occupational disease.
Almost every company has employees. As a result, unfortunately, almost every company has employee relations issues. Mr. Gomes has spent his entire legal career helping employers avoid labor and employment problems by partnering with his clients to provide preventative counseling and training involving discipline, discharge, reductions-in-force and other personnel matters, employee handbooks, employment agreements, and affirmative action plans. On those occasions when litigation has been unavoidable, Mr. Gomes has represented his clients in federal and state courts and before government agencies throughout the United States in all aspects of labor law and employment litigation, including allegations of discrimination, harassment and retaliation, wage and hour, labor relations, and other matters arising out of the employment relationship such as covenants not to compete, trade secret misappropriation, unfair competition, computer theft, and employee benefits.
A member of the State Bar of Georgia, Mr. Gomes is admitted to practice before the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, and the U.S. District Courts for the Middle and Northern Districts of Georgia. He is a member of the American Bar Association and the Atlanta Bar Association.
Mr. Gomes is the author of “Preventing and Defending Against ‘Stealth’ Discrimination Claims Under Sarbanes-Oxley,” a chapter in the Aspatore Books publication, Complying with Sarbanes-Oxley’s Whistleblower Provisions: Leading Lawyers on Understanding Whistleblower Provisions, Complying with Key Regulations, and Responding to Claims.
In 2005, 2006, 2009, and 2010, Mr. Gomes was selected as a Rising Star by Law & Politics magazine. Rising Stars are the top young attorneys in Georgia who are 40 or younger or have been in practice for 10 years or less as chosen by Georgia’s top lawyers, who are asked to vote for the best young attorneys they have personally observed in action, and confirmed through the independent research of Law & Politics. Only 2.5 percent of Georgia attorneys are named Rising Stars. Mr. Gomes also has been featured in Who’s Who in American Law, Who’s Who in America, and Who’s Who in the World.
Mr. Gomes earned a Juris Doctor, cum laude, from Washington and Lee University School of Law in 1998. During law school, he clerked for Judge Barry J. Stone of Florida’s Fourth District Court of Appeals. He interned with the Office of the U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Virginia, and was selected as First Place Oralist in the Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition’s 1998 Eastern Regional. Mr. Gomes earned a Bachelor of Arts in History and Geography, with distinction, from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1995, where he was Phi Beta Kappa.
