As part of the S.C. Hospital Association’s Opening Minds in South Carolina Campaign, Nelson Mullins and South Carolina PSI Facilities are sponsoring "Fine Line: Mental Health/Mental Illness" – a documentary of voices, stories, and portraits by Michael Nye, in March to promote awareness and increase understanding of mental illness and the people associated with the disease.
The interactive exhibit is a documentary of voices, stories, and portraits that confronts stereotypes and reveals the courage and fragility of people living with mental illnesses. Photographer Michael Nye spent four years photographing and recording personal stories of people with mental illness. Schizophrenia, depression, obsessive-compulsive, anxiety and bi-polar disorders are among the illnesses showcased in the exhibit. The 55 black-and-white photographs and personal stories are glimpses into the much larger, complex lives of individuals with mental illness and substance abuse disorders. Mounted between each photograph is a CD player and instructions so viewers can listen to each story while looking into the face of a real person with a real illness. Each face is an invitation to listen and to learn.
"Fine Line" will be on display at 701 Center for Contemporary Art, located at 701 Whaley Street, Columbia, SC., March 11 – April 25. The exhibit is free. For more information, visit the association’s Web site at www.scha.org/mentalhealth.
